Wales Head Coach Gatland Unfazed by Pressure Amid 10-Game Winless Streak
On a bright autumn afternoon at the team’s training base, Wales head coach Warren Gatland faced tough questions about his future, admitting he had not yet considered resigning despite his side’s 10-game losing streak.
Gatland, who has led Wales for over a decade, acknowledged the pressure he is under, but insisted he remains “comfortable” with the situation. “I haven’t really thought about it,” he said when asked if he might step away from the role. “If a decision is made, I’m more than comfortable with that. I’ll probably go back to the beach, have a glass of wine, and enjoy myself away from some of the pressure.”
The Veteran Coach’s Approach
The veteran coach’s comments came after he made four changes to the Wales team set to take on Australia on Sunday. A defeat would see the 2024 squad become the worst-performing Welsh national team in history, surpassing the 10-game winless run in 2002/03.
Despite the team’s struggles, Gatland remains resolute in his approach. “We’ve tried to point out from the outset that we need to go through some pain,” he said. “I didn’t think there’d be this much pain to be honest, but I’m comfortable with the pressure being on me.”
Dealing with Criticism
The pressure has come from various quarters, with former Wales players Jamie Roberts and Mike Phillips among those criticizing Gatland’s regime. The head coach, however, insists he has no issue with such opinions. “I never have been critical of anyone for having an opinion. I encourage people to have an opinion. That’s always healthy for the sport,” he said.
Facing the Wallabies
As Wales prepare to face the resurgent Wallabies, Gatland acknowledged the challenge ahead, particularly with the absence of key scrum-half Tomos Williams due to injury. But the experienced coach remains resolute in his belief in the team’s long-term development, stating, “Do I believe in what we’re doing? 100 per cent.”
