Wales Face Uncertainty Ahead of Second Test Against Australia
Wales’ preparations for the second Test against Australia in Melbourne have been disrupted by a series of injury concerns, with number eight Aaron Wainwright in particular doubt for the upcoming clash.
Wainwright, who earned his 50th international cap in the 25-16 defeat in the first Test in Sydney, limped off in the final minutes of the game due to a leg injury. Wales assistant coach Rob Howley confirmed that the medical team is still assessing the extent of the 26-year-old’s issue. “He was outstanding in the game. His carries and footwork got us on the front foot on many an occasion,” Howley said. “Hopefully [he’ll be available]. But we’re waiting for that assessment to come back from the medical team.”
Wainwright has been a key figure for Wales, starting the last eight Tests in the number eight jersey and emerging as one of the team’s standout performers this season. His potential absence would be a significant blow for the visitors.
Additional concerns surround the fitness of full-back Liam Williams, prop Gareth Thomas, and wing Josh Hathaway, while prop Dillon Lewis and lock Ben Carter are also battling to be fit after missing the opening Test.
“Liam will hopefully be available for selection, we’re waiting on him,” Howley said. “Gareth Thomas had a bit of a dead leg, he was back in training today. Josh Hathaway is being monitored, he had a bump on his arm. Dillon and Ben Carter trained this morning with us. Hopefully those players who came off, fingers crossed, will be available for selection.”
With the series poised at 1-0 to Australia, Wales will be hoping to have as many of their key players fit and available for the crucial second Test in Melbourne.
