Legendary Wales Hooker Ken Owens Retires at 37 After Illustrious Career

On [DATE], the rugby union world bid farewell to one of the most respected and decorated players in recent history, as Wales’ most-capped hooker Ken Owens announced his retirement at the age of 37. Owens, who represented Wales 91 times and earned 5 Test caps for the British and Irish Lions, hung up his boots after a remarkable career that spanned over a decade.

    Owens’ Remarkable Achievements

Owens’ achievements are nothing short of remarkable. The talismanic forward was a key figure in Wales’ golden era, winning four Six Nations titles, including two Grand Slams, and appearing at three World Cups. His leadership and inspirational play were crucial as Wales reached the semi-finals of the global tournament on two occasions.

In addition to his international exploits, Owens spent his entire professional club career with the Scarlets, making a staggering 274 appearances and captaining the side for seven years. His loyalty and dedication to the regional team were exemplified by his role in their 2017 Pro12 league triumph.

    Retirement and Tributes

Owens’ retirement comes after a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to a persistent back injury that ruled him out of the 2023 Rugby World Cup. “Not playing has been challenging, but the time is right to follow medical advice and hang up my boots,” the veteran hooker reflected. “Whilst part of me wishes I could have done more, I am well aware that if you had told me as a kid I would be fortunate enough to experience what I have, I wouldn’t have believed you.”

The tributes have poured in for Owens, with Wales head coach Warren Gatland hailing him as “a brilliant ambassador for the game in Wales” and Scarlets boss Dwayne Peel describing him as “one of the greatest players to have worn the Scarlets jersey.” Owens’ leadership, passion, and dedication to his country and club have cemented his status as a true Welsh rugby icon.
