Wales National Rugby Union Team Adopts Simplified Approach for Australia Tour
As the Wales national rugby union team prepares to face Australia in a two-Test series, centre Nick Tompkins has revealed their plans to adopt a more simplified game plan.
Tompkins, 29, acknowledged that this approach may be perceived as “boring and tedious” by some, but emphasized the importance of returning to the team’s core strengths. “We will probably have a more simplified game plan,” Tompkins told the Rugby Union Daily podcast. “You are going to see what some people might find boring or tedious but we are going to get back to our roots, working hard and making sure our defence, kicking game and how we compete for the ball is dominant again.”
The Wales squad arrived in Australia on the back of seven consecutive international defeats, having finished bottom of the Six Nations table for the first time in 21 years. Tompkins believes that stripping back their tactics and refocusing on the fundamentals is crucial to rebuilding the team’s identity and confidence.
“We are trying to strip things right back and give ourselves something we can hang our hat on and be proud of,” Tompkins explained. “You have to give yourselves an identity as a team and that’s how you breed confidence. You have to start with the fundamentals.”
The first Test against the Wallabies will take place in Sydney on Saturday, followed by the second match in Melbourne a week later, as Wales look to turn their fortunes around through a simplified, back-to-basics approach to rugby union gameplay.
