BBC Rugby Union: Wales Announce Summer Squad, Gatland Looks for Physical Options at Fly-half
In a move that signals their search for a long-term solution at fly-half, Wales head coach Warren Gatland has named a single specialist in the position for the upcoming summer internationals. Costelow, who started four games in this year’s Six Nations and the defeat against South Africa, is set to lead the charge, with Thomas and Jacob Beetham providing additional cover.
The Wales coaching staff has been actively seeking more physically imposing options at the pivotal number 10 role, leading Gatland to overlook Ioan Lloyd for the upcoming tour to Australia. Thomas, who has made just one start at fly-half for Cardiff this season, is expected to feature more prominently in the inside-centre position.
“With the retirement of Dan Biggar and the unavailability of Gareth Anscombe, the Welsh have been in pursuit of a successor to solidify their options at fly-half.”
The inclusion of Costelow in the summer squad underscores their intention to grant the young talent extended playing time to further his development.
Meanwhile, Hathaway, who has represented Wales and England at the Under-20 level, offers versatility as a full-back and wing. His selection comes after Exeter’s Immanuel Feyi-Waboso, who was in a similar position earlier this season, opted to play for England.
As Wales continue their quest for a consistent fly-half, the upcoming summer internationals will provide a crucial opportunity for Costelow and the rest of the squad to showcase their abilities and solidify their places in the national setup.
