Wales Eager to Impress Ahead of 2027 World Cup
In a preview of the upcoming Wales vs. South Africa rugby union match, flanker Ellis Wainwright emphasized the significance of this encounter as a crucial step towards the 2027 World Cup. Wainwright, a veteran with 48 international caps, underscored the importance of this game as an opportunity for Wales to assess their progress and identify areas for improvement.
“If we want to get better, this is the game to test ourselves and find out where we can get better,” said Wainwright.
The 26-year-old praised the team’s focus on being “brave” and “the aggressors” in the game, expressing confidence in the squad’s ability to perform at the highest level.
Wainwright encouraged new players to embrace the international stage, stating:
“If I was one of those guys coming in for the first time, I would just try and get myself into the game nice and early, be confident, put your hand up and try to make something happen.”
He believes that the more experienced players gain, the better it will be for the overall squad.
Wales’ head coach, Warren Gatland, has emphasized the goal of having as many players as possible with around 50 caps by the time of the 2027 World Cup. Wainwright acknowledged that this can be achieved by “exposing new guys into the team with international rugby,” which will inspire them to pursue more opportunities at the highest level.
As an established member of the starting lineup, Wainwright is just two appearances away from reaching the 50-cap milestone. He is determined to lead by example, stating:
“If I can lead on the pitch, I will. I am not the biggest of speakers off the pitch, but hopefully my actions can help guide us.”
Wainwright expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming match, saying, “I am feeling good. I love playing rugby, and the more games, the better. I am feeling fresh going into the game and looking forward to it.“
The upcoming Wales vs. South Africa match is set to be a crucial test for the Welsh team as they continue their preparations for the 2027 Rugby World Cup. With experienced players like Wainwright leading the way, and the integration of new talent, Wales is poised to make a strong statement on the international stage.
