Wales Rugby Union Team: A Year of Triumphs and Challenges on the Global Stage

Wales’ Rollercoaster Year in the International Arena

In a year marked by both highs and lows, the Wales national rugby union team experienced a rollercoaster ride on the international stage. With over 30 players now on full-time deals, Wales initially enjoyed a string of convincing wins over Ireland, Scotland, and Italy, running in tries with ease. This surge in form propelled them to a career-high world ranking of sixth and secured their place in the top tier of the new global tournament, WXV1.

However, their return to New Zealand proved to be a sobering experience, as they suffered defeats against Canada, New Zealand, and Australia, a stark reminder of the gap between them and the world’s elite teams. Undeterred, Wales remained committed to testing themselves against the best, determined to become the best.

The Dismal 2024 Six Nations Campaign

The subsequent 2024 Six Nations campaign proved to be a dismal affair for Wales, as they managed just a solitary win against Italy, earning the dreaded wooden spoon. Undaunted, they fought their way back, qualifying for WXV2 through a play-off with Spain and securing a historic victory over Australia in a friendly at Rodney Parade as part of their preparations.

    Disappointment in WXV2

Alas, that feat could not be replicated when it mattered most. Wales were outclassed by the Wallaroos and Italy in South Africa, before salvaging a win against Japan in a disappointing tournament outing.

“We’re not where we want to be, but we’re determined to keep working hard and improve. This team has the potential to reach new heights, and we won’t stop until we get there.”
