Autumn Series: Wales Aim to End Losing Streak Against Resilient Wallabies
As the Welsh national rugby union team prepares to face the Australia Wallabies at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff this Sunday, former Wales center Jamie Roberts has voiced his critical assessment of the team’s recent performance and their head coach, Warren Gatland.
Roberts, who won 94 caps for Wales under Gatland’s first stint as the national team’s head coach, became an independent non-executive director on the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) board in November 2023. In his capacity as a respected rugby pundit, he did not hold back in his assessment of Wales’ 24-19 defeat against Fiji last weekend, stating it was the “worst Wales had been in the professional era.”
“While acknowledging the immense respect I have for Gatland and his coaching team, I feel that Wales have not made the necessary progress under the experienced New Zealand coach,” Roberts expressed.
Gatland, in turn, insisted that he had no issue with Roberts expressing his views as a paid pundit, although he revealed that a couple of people had contacted the former player, suggesting he was out of line.
Roberts, however, stood by his comments, stating that they were “objective facts” and not merely opinions. He emphasized that his role as a non-executive with the WRU and his work as a pundit were separate, and he would not apologize for making “honest comments.”
The upcoming match against the Wallabies presents Wales with an opportunity to end their 10-game losing streak, which has seen them drop to a lowly 11th position in the World Rugby rankings. Roberts believes that Wales have a “great chance” to claim victory, despite the Wallabies’ recent 42-37 triumph over England at Twickenham.
The former Wales center argues that the psychological challenge of backing up that emotionally charged victory could work in Wales’ favor, and he has no doubt that Gatland will emphasize the importance of managing that aspect of the game with his players this week.
With a roster of younger players stepping up due to the retirement of several experienced internationals, the Welsh team faces a significant challenge in the coming years. However, Roberts believes that “honest discourse about the game in Wales is healthy,” and he remains confident that Wales can emerge victorious against the resilient Wallabies this Sunday.
