Wales wing Owen Lane to leave Cardiff for France’s Valance Romans
In a major move, Wales wing Owen Lane has announced his decision to depart Cardiff at the conclusion of the 2023-24 season. The 26-year-old will be joining French second-tier club Valance Romans, ending his tenure with the Welsh side.
Lane, who has earned five caps for the Wales national team and scored two tries, expressed his gratitude for his time at Cardiff. “I have made friends both on and off the pitch that will last a lifetime and Cardiff will always be home. It’s where my and my partner’s family are and I will always class Cardiff as my club,” he said.
However, the player acknowledged the appeal of a new challenge, stating, “Moving to France is a chance for me (…) to experience a different culture and league, which is a new and exciting challenge for me both on and off the field.”
Unfortunately, Lane’s international career has been hampered by injuries, with his last cap coming against New Zealand in October 2021. During his time at Cardiff, he has amassed an impressive tally of 43 tries in 92 appearances.
Lane’s departure marks the second instance this week of a Wales international leaving Cardiff and potentially ending their Test career for the time being. Prop Rhys Carre has also announced his move to Saracens in England.
As Valance Romans prepare for the latter stages of the Pro2 season, currently sitting 11th in the 16-team league, they will be hoping that Lane’s arrival can bolster their chances of success.
