Wales Star Liam Williams in Talks for Dragons Transfer
Welsh rugby union star Liam Williams is in discussions about a potential transfer from Japan’s Kuboto Spears back to his homeland, with the Dragons actively working on a deal to secure his services. The 33-year-old, a two-time British & Irish Lion, left Cardiff for a move to the Far East following the conclusion of the 2023 World Cup in France.
Returning Home for Family Reasons
Williams’ switch to Kuboto Spears meant he missed the 2024 Six Nations, but he returned to the international fold for Warren Gatland’s Wales side during their July matches against Australia. Last season, the versatile back spent extensive periods travelling between his home in Wales and Japan to feature for Kuboto.
“While Williams has enjoyed his time in Japan’s Rugby League One, sources indicate he has been eager for a return home, especially as he and his wife Sophie are expecting their first child.”
Collaboration with Former Coaches
The Dragons, led by coach Dai Flanagan, have now made their move to explore a transfer for the experienced international. Though a deal has not yet been officially finalized, positive discussions have been held in the past week, and it is understood that Williams is likely to sign for the Welsh side. Flanagan and Williams have collaborated previously at the Scarlets and with the Wales national team, so they are well acquainted.
Joining the 100-Cap Club
The prospect of joining Wales’ distinguished 100-cap club is sure to be on Williams’ mind as a potential target in the next year or so. The Welsh Rugby Union recently featured the player prominently in their kit launches for the 2024-25 season, suggesting he remains an important figure for Gatland’s team moving forward.
As Wales and Gatland have endured a challenging 12 months, with the team dropping to 11th in the World Rugby rankings, the addition of Williams’ international experience and quality could provide a valuable boost for the Dragons as they aim to climb the United Rugby Championship table when the new campaign kicks off this month.
