Wales National Rugby Union Team’s Youth Development Programs Shine
In a recent development, the Wales national rugby union team’s youth development programs have proven to be a breeding ground for future stars. Nicholas-McLaughlin, the head coach of the Wales Under-18s and assistant coach of the Under-20s, led the Lightning squad to a third-place finish in last year’s tournament, describing it as a “fantastic experience” for the young players.
Several of the players from Nicholas-McLaughlin’s squad, including Nel Metcalfe, Gwennan Hopkins, Sian Jones, and Molly Reardon, have since gone on to make their senior Wales debuts, highlighting the success of the youth development pathway.
Meanwhile, the Wales Under-20s attack coach, Beck, had a more seasoned squad at his disposal, featuring established internationals such as Alex Callender, Natalia John, and Sioned Harries in the Thunder squad. Beck emphasized the invaluable opportunity for these players to “test yourself against the best in Wales, Ireland and Scotland.”
“It was a fantastic experience for the young players.”
