Welsh Rugby Union Announces Retirement of Veteran Lock Shona Wakley
On February 15th, the Welsh Rugby Union reported that Shona Wakley, a 33-year-old lock, is stepping away from international rugby after earning 45 caps for the Wales national team. Wakley, née Powell-Hughes, was named in the current Six Nations squad but has not featured in the campaign.
The Bridgend-born player made her debut as the youngest member of Wales’ 2010 Rugby World Cup squad, facing South Africa. In a social media announcement, Wakley expressed her pride in having “played a small part in the development of women’s game in Wales,” after impressing with her performances for Brython Thunder in the Celtic Challenge this season.

Wakley’s last appearance for Wales was against Scotland in the 2020 Women’s Six Nations tournament. The experienced forward is now retiring from the international stage, leaving a lasting impact on the growth of women’s rugby in the country.
