Veteran Wales Lock Jake Ball to Hang Up His Boots after Illustrious Career
In a bittersweet announcement, former Wales lock Jake Ball has revealed his decision to retire from professional rugby at the end of the current season. The 33-year-old, who earned 50 caps for the national team, was a crucial member of the Grand Slam-winning side in 2019 and helped Wales reach the semi-finals of the Rugby World Cup that same year.
Beginning his career with the Western Force, Ball later joined the Scarlets in 2012, where he made 133 appearances over nine seasons. He has spent the last few years plying his trade in Japan with NEC Green Rockets.
“Professional rugby has been my dream, my passion and my career for the last 15 years. I have made the tough decision to retire at the end of the 2024-25 season in order to spend more time with my family.”
The seasoned lock was a integral part of the Scarlets squad that secured the Pro12 title in the 2016-17 season. Reflecting on his storied career, Ball said:
“Every chapter has enabled me to live out that childhood dream. To my team-mates, coaches, staff and fans I have made some great friendships and memories that I will cherish. Thank you for the support and good times over the years.”
