Polarization in Turkey

SUMMARY

In this section, polarization in Turkey based on identity is examined in its various dimensions, while tolerance toward religious differences and issues of gender are also explored. Individuals’ fears, feelings of alienation, and expectations for the future are likewise analyzed:

• Syrian refugees harm Turkey’s economy.
  
• A religious marriage (nikah) is necessary for a man and woman to live together.
  
• Cities have become less safe because of Syrian refugees.
  
• I am afraid that younger generations are becoming distant from religion.
  
• I am afraid that my freedom will be restricted.
  
• A woman should obtain her husband’s permission in order to work.
  
• My son-in-law/daughter-in-law can be from a different religion.
  
• I believe my daughter/son will have a good future in Turkey.
  
• I feel like a stranger in my own country.
