Depression Index

SUMMARY

The section includes the findings of the depression index calculated from the moods of the society that we have been following for 10 years as part of the KONDA Barometer. The depression index includes the ratios of the responses to eight mood judgments, six negative and two positive, and an index score:

• I feel overwhelmed.
• Everything felt like a burden/ came from my back.
• I slept restlessly.
• I felt happy.
• I felt lonely.
• I enjoyed life.
• I felt sad.
• I was weak.

The depression index, one of the indices we have been tracking in KONDA Barometer since the December'15 Barometer, shows that the mood of the society in Turkey has slightly worsened compared to 10 years ago. There has been little change in the general mood since the coronavirus pandemic period. The increasing economic bottleneck is significantly correlated with this trend. While the unemployed and CHP voters are the groups where this tendency is highest, students remain above the Turkey average despite a 0.1-point decrease since May 2021, and the tendency for depression among retirees has increased. Over the last 10 years, the rate of those feeling overwhelmed has risen, while the rate of those stating they felt happy in the last week has fallen. A relationship has also been established between the economic crisis/livelihood status and the depression index.
