SUMMARY

The chapter examines the extent to which authoritarian values are supported in Turkish society, the level of authoritarianism within social and political circles, and its evolution over the past 10 years:

  • Force may be necessary to protect our traditional way of life.
  • In events such as protests and strikes, the government may block all forms of transportation if deemed necessary.
  • People who drink alcohol should not eat in the same place as people praying.
  • The majority can eliminate minority rights if it so chooses.
  • Minority languages and cultures should be taught in our schools, and the establishment of separate schools by minorities should be prohibited.
  • Our country needs courageous, determined, and dedicated leaders more than laws and political programs.

The level of authoritarianism in Turkish society is very close to the midpoint on a scale of 1 to 5. Society is divided between pluralism and authoritarianism. Two out of every five people have a low tendency toward authoritarianism, while three have a high or neutral tendency. The tendency toward authoritarianism significantly determines reactions to political events, and a neutral position also carries the potential for higher support for political power.
